ADDRESSING RACIAL DISCRIMINATION ROOTED IN MALAYSIAN POLITICS

Updated: Sep 27

Abstract

Racial discrimination in Malaysian politics remains an issue despite the nation’s commitment to the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights. This discrimination can be traced back to colonial “divide and rule” policies, perpetuated through subsequent actions. Several efforts have been taken to combat racial discrimination in Malaysia, such as legal frameworks such as the Sedition Act 1948 and Election Offences Act 1954, however, they are not without criticism. South Africa's and Singapore's efforts to address this institutionalised issue are also discussed. Addressing racial discrimination in politics is crucial to fostering national unity and upholding the principles of equality and justice.
