Abstract

Party hopping has become a culture in Malaysia, and it started way back in 1967. Malaysia has faced a lot of political crises due to party hopping. The well-known crisis would be the collapse of the government at the federal level where a great number of elected representatives switched alliances. Party hopping has caused severe implications to most parties and from there the idea of enacting an Anti-Hopping Law is supported unconditionally. The action of implementing anti-hopping law has been widely spoken about by people and it has also gathered plenty of attention as well. Numerous opinions have been given out and all of them fall under two main groups. One group believes that the law is for democracy and the other group believes that it is against democracy. In this article the writer discusses in-depth the issue of party hopping and whether the legislation is relevant and necessary together with the discussion of whether it is for or against democracy.
